Summer School on

Global Differential Geometry

14 - 18 May 2018

at the AIMS Center M'bour (Sénégal)

The broad topic of this summer school is Global Differential Geometry, an active area of research at numerous mathematical centers worldwide. More specifically, the courses of this school will include symplectic and Poisson geometry, foliation theory, as well as large scale index theory. Applications in mathematical physics will also be addressed. The selection of topics is tailor-made to begin at a level that is accessible to participants coming from all over Africa as well as Europe, with a basic background in differential geometry, leading them into areas of current research in global differential geometry. Through this event, we also hope to initiate some network building between European and sub-saharan African scientists.

Program

Lecture Courses

Introduction to symplectic and contact geometry

A. Banyaga (Penn State, USA)
D. Houenou (Cotonou, Benin)

Hamiltonian dynamics and symplectic capacities

K. Cieliebak (Augsburg, Germany)
U. Frauenfelder (Augsburg, Germany)

Pseudodifferential operators in geometry and quantum field theory

S. Paycha (Potsdam, Germany)

Riemannian geometry and analysis

exercise classes by the organizers together with Cyrille Combete, Cotonou, Benin

Applications

Around 30 scientists from Africa and from Europe will be able to participate in the summer school. Acquaintance with methods from differential geometry at the master level is required. Preference will be given to younger scientists, working at the doctoral or postdoctoral level.

Applications for the summer school must contain the following:

  • An academic CV
  • A letter of motivation including a brief description of future plans in mathematics
  • A letter of recommendation from an University professor
  • A statement whether you apply for financial support either for both travel and lodging, or for lodging alone

Please send your application, except the letter of recommendation, in one PDF file to kdrame@aims-senegal.org.
The confidential letter of recommendation must be sent in a separate e-mail to the same e-mail adress.

The deadline for applications has been extended to the 2nd of March 2018.

Workshop

During the week following the summer school, 21 - 25 May 2018, there will be an

International workshop on Global Differential Geometry

at the same place, funded by the DFG, AIMS and the ICTP (Trieste).
Participants of the summer school may apply for funding to participate in the workshop as well. Please see this ICTP webpage for further information.
