I studied mathematics and physics in the School of Mathematics and Physics of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. Then I continued in the Section of Mathematical Logic of the Institute of Mathematics, where I received my Ph.D.

Then I became an assistant at the University of Bonn, the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. I was a member of the Logic Group in the Mathematical Institute of the University of Bonn. I finished my habilitation in 1998 in Bonn.

From January 1995 to December 1996 I worked at the Mathematics Department of the The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, holding a fellowship from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.

From April 1999 to March 2001 I was a Minerva fellow at the Institute of Mathematics of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem working together with Saharon Shelah.

From April 2001 to August 2009 I was affiliated with the Kurt Gödel Research Center for Mathematical Logic of the University of Vienna in various positions.

From September 2009 until September 2010 I was a Marie Curie Fellow at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Now I am a professor of mathematics at the University of Freiburg in Germany.
