Roots of Unity and Positive Characteristic

This article gives an overview of [AJS94]. I outline our results to the effect that representation categories of both quantum groups at a root of one and semisimple algebraic groups in positive characteristic admit a common combinatorial model over Z. This allows in particular to deduce Lusztig's old modular conjectures from their newer quantum analogues (which are a theorem).
