Location and Travel Information

Location

The Institute of Mathematics is located at Eckerstraße 1, in the 'Institutsviertel' just north of Freiburg's city centre.

Walking from the central train station:

Leaving Freiburg central train station, cross the street directly in front of it (Bismarckallee) and follow it to the left (due north, parallel to the railroad tracks). At the following big intersection, keep going north along Stefan-Meier-Straße. After having passed the parking lot (on your right), take the footpath to the right. The big brick-red building on your left houses the institute of mathematics. To get to the main entrance, walk a few steps onto Eckerstraße. The walk takes about 7 minutes.

Clickable map of the University.
On the map, the yellow building just north of "Gewerbeschule" (which itself is just north of Friedrichring) is the mathematics institute in Eckerstr. 1. On this map, Rheinstrasse is drawn through towards Stefan-Meier-Straße, though actually in the western end of Rheinstrasse there is only a footpath connecting the two streets. On the right-hand side of the footpath there is the Gewerbeschule and on the left-hand side there is a garage with solar cells on the roof.

We booked rooms in The Alex Hotel, which is just opposite the mathematical institute. The entrance is not on Eckerstraße but on Rheinstraße, number 29.

Clickable map of the Institutsviertel.
On this map, the institute of mathematics in Eckerstr. 1 is building no. 2. The coffee breaks will be in the commons room and on the terasse of the institute.
The lectures will be held in Albertstraße 23 b, which is building no. 13 on the map. There is a footpath between buildings number 10 and 30 on the map that connects Eckerstraße with Albertstraße 23 b.
The lunches will be at FRIAS, Albertstraße 19, building no. 24 on the map.

German Railway timetable

By plane

There are several airports convenient to Freiburg:

Basel/Mulhouse Airport (ca. 60 km): A regular bus shuttle Freiburger-Reisedienst operates to and from Freiburg, leaving from the French side of the airport. After collecting your luggage be sure to exit passport control on the French side. The bus stop is located in front of the main entrance for Arrivals. Take the bus (travel time approx. one hour) to Freiburg main station (Hauptbahnhof). You can buy the ticket when boarding the shuttle bus.

Frankfurt/Main Airport (ca. 240 km, train): There are two train stations at the airport. One for local regional connections and one for long distance. Proceed to the long distance station, Fernbahnhof, (AirRail Terminal) opposite Terminal 1. InterCityExpress (ICE) trains to Freiburg run hourly during the day and take roughly two and a half hours. German Railway timetable

Zürich Airport (ca. 150 km, train) is about two hours from Freiburg by train. See Swiss Federal Railways from Zurich Airport or again German Railway timetable.

Stuttgart Airport (ca. 200 km, train) and Strasbourg Airport (60 km by car, otherwise ca. 80 km, with a shuttle to Gare Centrale in Strasbourg, then to Offenburg with the Metro Rhin train, then with the German Railway to Freiburg) can sometimes be useful for travelling to Freiburg.
